The National Cliff Protection Project In Ashkelon

DAKAR company provided long term diving services for TAAVURA company for the purpose
of building underwater breakwaters – the first of its kind in israel.
Along the shores of Israel there are limestone cliffs which are in danger of collapsing due to
accelerated wear and tear as a result of the erosion of the waves at their base.
Among the solutions proposed, the final decision was to build a “soft” breakwater made of
huge cloth bags filled with sea sand, which would be located about 100 meters from the cliff.
The work began in Ashkelon where the breakwater was built in the length of hundreds of
meters. The work was done on foot barge (jack-up) during this time, the divers deployed the
huge rolls of cloth(each in the size of 25*4 meters). Fixed them to the bottom of the sea and
inflated them with a mixture of water and sand at high pressure.
The work was done in open sea conditions at shallow depth which made the work very
difficult due to the waves breaking on the divers.
The mission was carried out at high intensity and sometimes involved the work of up to 8
divers working in coordination and safety under the water.
